They are not to be glorified, but neither are they to be condemned. They are forces, agents of change that the cosmos deploys with precision, however cruel or frightening their method may seem.
The murderer, the one who steals breath, may be the one sent to awaken a nation, to shape destinies, or to fulfill contracts written long before the dawn of time. Their acts are not excused, nor are they exalted, but they are acknowledged as part of the vast, unknowable plan that binds us all. Perhaps their darkness compels others to seek light; perhaps their cruelty drives humanity to cling harder to compassion.
Some say the souls who walk the darkest paths do so not out of mere chance or blind cruelty, but by a choice born of free will—a choice made after their own essence had already strayed too far from the light to return unscathed. It is whispered among mystics that these souls, no longer tethered to the radiant harmony of creation, are entrusted with tasks so heavy, so undesirable, that only those who have nothing left to lose can bear their weight. They become the veiled hands of fate, intervening in catastrophic crossroads that might otherwise spiral into calamity for humanity as a whole. In their descent, they sacrifice themselves further, stepping into the shadows so that the threads of destiny might remain unbroken, sparing the greater collective from an unbearable fate. Who can say how the wheel of fate turns, and what role each soul plays in its revolutions?
In the shadows, there is also wisdom. It is said that the soul who bears the darkness suffers most deeply. For to walk that path is to carry the weight of karma, to act as the universe’s sword or shadow, cutting away what no longer serves. And when their role is done, when their shadowy purpose is fulfilled, they must face the toll their actions have wrought upon their spirit, an immense reckoning that transcends our mortal judgments.
The great mystics of old whispered, “Do not despise the shadow, for it is the shadow that gives shape to the light.” Even the stars are born in darkness, emerging from the black void of the heavens to illuminate the infinite expanse. So too do the darkest spirits serve a purpose: to challenge, to transform, to bring truths into the light that might otherwise remain buried. They remind us of the delicate balance of creation, where neither light nor dark can exist alone, and where every shadow cast is born of some greater brilliance.
And so, in our hearts, we must carry both discernment and humility. We do not glorify the darkness, nor do we shy away from naming its presence. But we must also remember that we are not the arbiters of the great plan. Our role is to observe, to learn, and to grow from what unfolds before us. Even the most terrifying storms carry lessons within their fury; even the most fearsome beings are instruments of something greater than we can fathom.
Let us tread carefully, then, on the paths of life, honoring the light yet not denying the shadows their place in the grand scheme. For without the shadow, there is no form. Without the night, the stars would remain unseen. And without the darkness, we would not know how deeply we long for the light. All paths—whether they inspire or terrify, whether they uplift or challenge—lead back to the eternal Source, and in their purpose, they are sacred.
